I debated & struggled on how to deal with prints I would like to share, and what is best way & timing for presenting the prints in galleries. So it occurred to me today to just create an ongoing Current Work Gallery that I will fill & empty as the work progresses. 

So keep checking back in the current work gallery for my news efforts. As the new replaces the old then the old will be moved into permanent galleries.

There are only six photographs in the Current Work Gallery at the moment. Check back soon for additions.

I participated in the Village Square show last year for the first time. It was not that I sold all that much but that customers were buying prints off my outside walls. I liked that feeling so I thought I'd give it another try and see if it works again. Saugatuck is Saugatuck and they are used to dealing with lots of people. The show is amazingly well organized given the small spaces and limited parking for unloading.

I participated in the Alma Highland Festival last year for first time. I can't say that sales were overwhelming, but I thought I'd give it a second try. It is a kick to see all the men and a few women traipsing around in kilts. The parade is also fun to watch. One has to kind of like bagpipes (which I conveniently do) as there are about as many bagpipes as kilts.

I was already in the car ready to go to BNI this morning when I noticed what I thought was one of my desiccated tulips back by the big rock in the backyard. I went to investigate. It turned out to be my first iris of 2012.

The van was packed and I was ready as I was going to be for the first show of the season. As time goes on I carry more stuff and fewer products. It all still fits inside the Caravan...just.

The kettle corn booth is always just across from me. They flame broil popcorn in a copper tub ALL day long. Not much of a temptation as I do not like the stuff.

The crowds were good if not overwhelming. This is my new arrangement with nothing to stop people from coming into the booth on the right and moving around the perimeter until they come to the bins. There is plenty of room for a stroller and all the trappings.

Now this was directly across from me, and is more tempting but not enough to walk across the grass to buy any. They were busy all day after they got their electrical issues resolved. The elephant ear trailer was next in line. I made do with just watching people eat these bigger than paper plate sized fried dough — your choice of sugar on top. These are very popular.

The sun finally came out in mid-afternoon. It actually warmed up. It did not last long. We were in gloom and chill most of the day, but it did not seem to slow anyone down. This was the view from the rear of the canopy.

This group was seriously working an elephant ear. This is serious business except for Ms. Polka Dot. She was having a very good time on the curb with occasional bites of elephant ear.

I had very good sales. Every year I've been to Spring Fling starting in 2009 I have done better each time. No complaints from me although I did hear a little grousing from one of the vendors about the economy.

I first met Michael Peychich (MGPPhotography.com) at Art in the Park in Warren when he walked over to my booth and we started talking. It is not odd to meet the same vendors in various show here & there, but Michael and I have connected a number of times over the years. If you come to this show you really need to find his booth as there is much to admire in his photography. It would be OK if you found my booth too, but do find Michael's. By the way I never do much sales wise when I'm on his side of the state nor he on mine. I'm looking for that to change with this show. Note, I did not say you should actually buy anything from Michael—just look!!

 

 

Michael is part of the organization running this show so I am sure he will be there.

The gallery is 49_Best of 2010 Gallery. You may have seen these photographs previously, but here they are again.

Most of the work of posting is hidden from you - the end user. Since it is very tempting to simply upload new photographs into a gallery; that is what I have done in the past. Now I'm in the process to doing the real work of adding such things as keywords, geographic locations, and actual descriptions. This can take some time. However, the purpose is to make the photograph visible to search engines.

There is a low and a high trail through the Sanford Nature Area on campus. The trail that runs near the river is especially in spring often soggy or overrun by the Red Cedar River. On this particular day the trail was clear enough. The stone bridge across the river was fetching.

You need to come out to this show and just stand where you can see the Grand River as it takes its last leg out to Lake Michigan. It is beautiful and truly 'grand'. This is my third trip to Grand Haven for this show and usually I have a great view of the river. There are also a lot of very fantastic vendors there with their work.

I was inducted into the Lansing 1 Chapter of BNI (http://www.bni.com/) this morning at the weekly meeting. This is a great group of local business folks. We effectively turn into each other's sales reps. That is a very good thing!

My sponsor suggested that I bring along prints as part of my 60 second spiel which everyone gets each week. I brought along three 20 x 30" stretched canvas prints: Isabella Sun, Hummingbird & Morning Rain.

I was surprised but Hummingbird sold to one of the members. I expected eventually to get referrals as member had a better understanding of what I do, but I did not expect to come home less one print. I was thrilled but surprised.

Well the results are in. The last vote came in at 11:44 PM last night. I was not awake.

I really appreciate everyone who voted in my Best Photographs of 2011 contest. It is a lot of fun to watch the votes come in and to finally see which photographs attract the consensus of opinion. It is usually very definitive as it was this time.

Well if I had voted I want to know if I won a print. The answer is that I have not revved up my random number generator to determine the nine winners. Just about every time I go on campus to shoot I end up taking at least one photograph of Beaumont Tower. I’ve not liked one of them until I took this one early in the fall.

It was late March and we’d had some warmer weather, some cold weather and some stiff winds. The usual high water in the Red Cedar for this time of year caused the flow over the spillway to shoot into the air but not exceptionally. The low branches blow the spillway along both sides of the river were decorated as if with molten glass. Even though the sun was crystal bright the air was frozen and the ice lasted well into the next days. This one is called Blue Return as it seems the ice is trying to return to the sunlight blue river.
